“Every Lagosian is a Comedian by Default” – Mide Coker, Brilla F.M Lagos
Olowosile Akintomide Coker popularly known as Mide Coker is an Ondo born comedian, event compere and an OAP at Brilla F.M Lagos. In this media chat with Akinborewa Gbenga, he spoke about the journey so far as a comedian and an OAP, the challenges so far and what his fans should expect from him in the year. Excerpts below:
You are popularly called Mide Coker. How did you come about the stage name?
(Smiles) Mide is from Akintomide while Coker is my English name
That’s beautiful. Can you give us a brief background about you?
OlowosileAkintomide Akinwumiju Coker is my name. I am from Ondo town in Ondo State. I am a graduate of History Education from Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. I’m a comedian, compere, writer and an OAP extraordinaire.
I do enjoy you when I listen to you on radio. As an OAP on Brilla f.m, how has it been like?
All glory to God sir but fans only hear the finished product. It’s challenging. Tasking and at the same time interesting. I love it.
As an event compere and comedian, where do you get your comic materials from?
God, observation, reading and meditating.
Looking at the comedy industry in Nigeria, what are the changes you have observed?
Hmmmm. Bro, the competition in Lagos is real. This is where you got to meet other comedians from the 36 states of Nigeria. Apart from that, every Lagosian is a comedian by default and that’s where God and originality comes in.
Have you ever run out of jokes while performing on stage?
(Laughs)Yes ooo. It can be so embarrassing but it’s part of the game.
Most embarrassing moment you cannot forget so easily?
None yet. Every moment is a lesson. I will answer that question again when I stop learning.
How do you unwind?
I say hi to the wind (Smiles). That’s on a lighter mood. Hmmmm … I dance, party reasonably, play games and watch football.
Do you have senior colleagues in the comedy industry that have been helpful to you in one way which you will like to appreciate?
I want to thank God almighty and my family. I also want to make shout out to Mc Arkbishop, Mc Shakara, Ushbebe, Firstborn, Owen gee, Calibird and everyone that has been a great support to the Mide Coker brand. God bless everyone.
What special thing should your fans be expecting from you this year.
Conquering more territories, building more on my brand and moving closer to God. I am also coming out of my long time break to host another comedy show to be announced in due course. Thank you.
