It was another grand occasion in Ondo city today as the University Of Medical Sciences (Unimed) launched the Friends of Unimed Fund (FUF), It was an event that witnessed so many dignitaries who came in their numbers to grace the maiden occasion. The launch which was set up in order to meet the necessary financial needs of the newly established institution was well condescend as it was evident from the way several personalities from within the state and outside contributed reasonablely to support the fund raising occasion.
However some of the notable dignitaries in attendance include, The Executive Governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, The Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Dr, Victor Kiladejo The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo and some other top politicians, Royal fathers and chiefs.
In the speech delivering aspect of the event, The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the Institution, Emeritus Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe in his brilliant speech made it crystal clear that all funds donated would be judiciously used for the growth of the University. He further emphasised that not a single penny will go to personal pockets. In his well orchestrated speech, He further went on to enumerate the fact that at some point, The Government cannot do everything including tertiary funding, Stating that people themselves must rise to the occasion.
The Vice Chancellor of the Institution Prof. Friday Okonofua who was apparently beaming with smile all through the launch took time to appreciate High Chief Adeduro for proposing the idea of small donation from persons as it was the idea that escalated into what is today known as the friends of Unimed fund. He equally highlighted that for a new university, There is the need to build new infrastructure, There is also the need for substantial funds to build this facilities.
Afterwards, The Osemawe took time to thank everyone in attendance as he was quoted saying “This celebration is not for Ondo kingdom but for all Nigerians because the first of its kind is in our state. It is something that should gladden all of us”. He also made reference to the fact that Ondo Boys High School (O.B.H.S) which happens to be the first high school was established in Ondo town as well as the Ondo Anglican Diocese.
Finally, the State Governor in his swift speech dwelled on encouraging individuals to donate generously citing a popular literature book of little drops of water making an ocean. He further emphasized the need for grassroot fund raising as he believes that little drops of money can run a university.
