An outbreak of cholera has been reported at the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, with four fatalities recorded with a high number of others currently hospitalized.

The outbreak was confirmed on Monday by local authorities while also calling on residents to embrace urgent health precautions as incidents of the outbreak reported across several communities.

Mr Samuel Amalau, the executive chairman of Bokkos local government area states that affected communities includes the Hurti community, Bokkos West, Bokkos Central, and Mangol with patients receiving urgent medical attention at primary health care centres and the local cottage hospital.

“Yes, we have an outbreak of Cholera in some communities in Bokkos, but the Primary Health Care Department, in collaboration with the cottage hospital, is working to address the challenge.

“So far, we have recorded four deaths, while several others are responding to treatment. Some have also been discharged,” Amalau said.

The chairman implored citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to basic hygiene protocols to prevent further spread.

“We are calling on our people to maintain clean environments, wash their hands regularly, and ensure their food and drinking water are hygienic,” he said.

He called on residents to report symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or fever to the nearest health facilities as soon as they notice them.

“Above all, they should report any symptom to the nearest PHC or go to the referral centre at any cottage hospital in  Bokkos,” he said.
