Colombia Constitutional Court declares gay marriage constitutional in Colombia

Colombia on Thursday became the fourth Latin American Country after Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil to legalise gay marriage. This followed the ruling of the country’s constitutional court which affirmed by majority that marriage between people of the same sex does not violate constitutional order.

The presiding judge, Maria Victoria Calle stated that “the current definition of the institution of marriage in civil law applies to them in the same way as it does for couples of the same sex”. This ruing effectively dispensed with the existing confusion on gay marriage in the country because under previous rulings, gay couples could formalise their unions before notaries and judges but it had remained a legal gray area and appeals had been launched against it.
