Top seed Perez Sanz of Spain on Saturday emerged this year’s winner of the Dayak Abuja Tennis Open after beating second seed Mohammed Safwat of Egypt 7-6, 6-4, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
NAN reports that the opening set swung from end to end before the Spaniard broke to win 7-6 in the first set.
He then maintained his composure in the second set to win the final match of the tournament played at the Tennis Centre of the Abuja National Stadium.
Sanz said, “The match was a huge success for me because I have been off the scene for these past weeks. So, I have to get something out of my journey to Nigeria.
“By winning in this second phase, which is the last week, I must say I am very pleased with the outcome of the event and I must say thank you to the organisers of this tournament, both the Tombim and Dayak Abuja Opens.
“They have really done a good job for the tennis world, I must say.”
Safwat said, “It was a tough match, because Sanz was smart enough to take his chances when they came. But I did not take mine and that was why I lost.
“About my coming to Nigeria, I think it is a huge experience and I did learn a lot from this event, though my experience was both inside and outside the courts.”
