As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day today, a chieftain of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Ondo State, Bolaji Omotayo Daramola, has urged citizens and leaders alike to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and consider a shift towards more people-focused governance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Daramola paid respects to democratic icons, such as Chief MKO Abiola and others, who laid down their lives for the freedoms enjoyed today. He noted that while their sacrifices paved the way, the country’s current trajectory falls short of the ideals they stood for.
Daramola described the day as a time not just for celebration but for sober reflection and recommitment to building a system that genuinely serves the people. He stressed the need for reforms that are transparent, inclusive, and rooted in justice.
“This day should be more about reflection than celebration. It’s a moment to ask hard questions and to push for a better Nigeria. We need leaders who listen. We need reforms that touch people’s lives. We need a country where human rights are respected and where every Nigerian, no matter their background, has a fair chance,” he reiterated.
Reaffirming his commitment to progressive change, Daramola stated that he will continue to invest in youth-focused programmes, community engagement, and policy advocacy aimed at putting people first.
