Ondo Governor To Flag Off Construction Of New Akure Flyover As Traffic Crisis Worsens
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, will on Monday, August 24, flag off the construction of a new flyover bridge along the Oyemekun-Oba Adesida Road in Akure, as part of efforts to tackle persistent traffic congestion in the state capital.
The flag-off ceremony, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Cathedral Junction on Oba Adesida Road, is expected to attract members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, as well as other stakeholders.
The proposed flyover will stretch from Adegbola Junction to the St. Mathias/NNPC Filling Station axis, one of the busiest corridors in central Akure.
The project is expected to provide an alternative route for motorists, ease pressure on major intersections and reduce traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak periods when vehicular movement along the corridor becomes difficult.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, saying the project was part of the administration’s commitment to easing traffic congestion and modernising urban infrastructure across Ondo State.
According to Adeniyan, the flyover is designed not only to improve vehicular movement but also to enhance the appearance, functionality and connectivity of the state capital.
He said the project was part of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s OUR EASE agenda, which focuses on infrastructure and other initiatives aimed at directly improving the wellbeing of residents.
Adeniyan said the administration remained committed to implementing projects that address challenges confronting residents, particularly in transportation and urban mobility.
The proposed bridge is also expected to improve connectivity between adjoining parts of Akure while easing the pressure created by increasing commercial and vehicular activities in the city.
As construction begins, attention will also turn to how traffic will be managed around the project corridor to minimise disruption to motorists and residents.
The governor is expected to formally perform the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, marking the commencement of work on the project.
The state government has urged residents and other stakeholders to support the initiative, describing the flyover as part of broader efforts to provide modern infrastructure capable of improving movement, economic activities and the quality of life in Akure.
