Arthur Fils capped a classy Cincinnati Open run with a see-saw championship-match win against Frances Tiafoe on Sunday to claim the biggest title of his career.
The 22-year-old Frenchman responded superbly to a mid-match surge from home favourite Tiafoe to earn a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 victory in Ohio and secure his first ATP Masters 1000 crown. Fils converted four of eight break points he earned and dominated the deciding set to end France’s 12-year wait for a Masters 1000 titlist.
“Wow, that feels good. That feels good,” Fils said. “It’s a lot of training, a lot of things, a lot of sacrifice. Injury. To be able to win one title like this means a lot to me.”
Fils entered Cincinnati having already reached Masters 1000 semi-finals in Miami and Madrid this season, and he appeared determined not to fall short at the business end on the big stage again at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Having dispatched World No. 10 Flavio Cobolli in Saturday’s semi-finals, he deployed his booming forehand to great effect in the first and third sets against Tiafoe to become the second man born in 2004 or later to win a Masters 1000 trophy (after Jakub Mensik, Miami 2025).
“It was tough, because I started very, very strong, and then in the second set I lost a little bit of focus,” Fils reflected after improving to 2-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Tiafoe. “He played unbelievable and put me under pressure. I had a small talk with myself in the toilet. I looked at myself in the mirror and said, ‘Man, even if you have to lose, you’re not going to get worse. So you need to fight and you need to find a way’.
“My coach [also] told me a couple of things, and here we are.”
Now 32-10 for the year, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Fils is up eight spots to fifth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin as a result of his Cincinnati showing, the first title run by a Frenchman at a Masters 1000 event since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto in 2014. His position is all the more remarkable considering his missed the entire Australian swing as well as Roland Garros due to injuries.
With his victory on Sunday, Fils has also taken a big step forward in his bid to crack the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time. He will on Monday rise 10 spots to a career-high No. 11, just 335 points behind No. 10 Taylor Fritz. At the upcoming US Open, Fils has no points to defend due to the fact he missed the 2025 edition of the hard-court major in New York because of a back injury.
Fils came racing out of the blocks in his maiden Masters 1000 final, striking the ball with the sort of ferocity that had already earned him Top-10 wins against Alex de Minaur and Cobolli earlier this week. In contrast, Tiafoe appeared a step off the pace in the early stages, and Fils was quickly ahead 3-0 after securing a break of serve in the second game.
Even as Tiafoe began to raise his level late in the set, Fils was simply too good in an opener during which he did not face a break point and won 13 of 15 points behind his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Tiafoe did not blink in the face of his opponent’s fast start, however. The 28-year-old, contesting his second Cincinnati championship match after his 2024 defeat to Jannik Sinner, raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set by expertly capitalising on a drop in Fils’s level. With the home crowd roaring him on, the American forced a decider.
Yet with the trophy on the line, Fils halted Tiafoe’s momentum in spectacular fashion. The Frenchman, adding plenty of vicious topspin to his forehand to get the ball kicking off the Cincinnati court, proved unstoppable in the third set. Although he let slip his first two match points with Tiafoe serving at 0-5, Fils made no mistake with his third to seal his fifth ATP Tour trophy.
