Arsenal came from behind to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Chelsea, who were beaten for the first time under Xabi Alonso.
Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead after just 77 seconds at Emirates Stadium, and it looked as though it might be a frustrating day for the reigning champions when Riccardo Calafiori had a potential equaliser overturned for offside.
However, Kai Havertz scored against his former club as an action-packed first half ended level, and the in-form Martin Odegaard completed the turnaround in the 50th minute.
Pedro Neto had struck a post for Chelsea at 1-1, and the Blues almost snatched a point late on, but David Raya made a flying save to deny Estevao.
The win takes Arsenal second in the early-season table on nine points, only behind Manchester City on goals scored. Chelsea sit fourth with six points.
How the match unfolded
The home fans were stunned into silence when Rogers – who was linked with Arsenal in media reports before joining Chelsea from Aston Villa – caught Raya out with a shot from the edge of the box.
Former Gunners goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez smothered Calafiori’s near-post flick as Arsenal responded by forcing several dangerous set-pieces, one of which almost led to a leveller.
Declan Rice’s delivery bounced through to Gabriel Magalhaes, whose shot was deflected onto the post by Martinez. Calafiori then prodded home after a touch from Ezri Konsa, but the goal was overturned following a VAR review because Konsa was offside.
Arsenal’s relentless pressure was rewarded in the 25th minute, though, as Havertz cut inside from the right before steering his finish inside the near post.
Chelsea offered two more warnings of their counter-attacking threat before half-time as Rogers curled wide and Neto went closer still, skipping past Gabriel and shooting against the far post.
And the champions made the most of those reprieves early in the second half, as Havertz cleverly let Christos Tzolis’s pass run through to Odegaard, who finished high into the net.
Only Martinez stood between Arsenal and another goal as he made a full-stretch stop to thwart Bukayo Saka, before reacting on his line to prevent a Wesley Fofana own goal.
But Mikel Arteta’s side had to survive one last scare at the other end, as Estevao’s curler was turned away from the top-left corner by Raya.
