The management of University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) is set for the formal Inauguration of the institution and the matriculation ceremony of 234 students admitted into five courses at the university namely Medicine, Dentistry, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy on 12th March, 2016.

The University started in full swing in July 2015 with all administrative and academic structure in place, which enabled the University to get the needed approval from Nigeria University Commission, when the Resource Verification Team visited the school in December 2015.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Friday Okonofua, while addressing newsmen in a press briefing at the school, noted that the combined matriculation and inauguration ceremony will provide opportunity for stakeholders to see the school at its foundational level and this will afford them give necessary suggestion and support to make it a cynosure of all. Prof. Okonofua firmly assured the public that UNIMED will prioritize research works and produce world-class doctors poised to improve health care delivery in the country.

Prof. Okonofua also dispelled the fear raised in some quarters about meeting the financial demands of the university in the wake of dwindling federal and state resources. He said the school has put in place a multi-functional and professional fund-raising mechanism headed by a former professor at the University of Maryland, USA.

He added that the University has floated an initiative tagged “Friends of UNIMED FUND (FUF)” which will be formally launched in a later date. In his words “The goal of the University is to attract one million faithful friends who will make annual donations of at least one thousand naira (N1,000) each. This will amount to about One Billion Naira each year, enough to embark on major developmental projects each year for the University”.

Prof Okonofua, while answering question posed by EkimogunMirror on the structure in place for Ondo the immediate host city to further benefit from the activities of the school, said “Ondos have shown so much determination in the school project and in due course all will be visible for all to see, there is plan in place for a pharmaceutical company where all drugs will be produced in the city. This will further create opportunities for people in Ondo city.
