Stand-up comedy in Nigeria has become a lucrative means of livelihood. In fact, this genre of entertainment has made a lot of people famous across the globe. Comedians like Kelvin Hart, Jamie Fox, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, and Chris Rock are well known all over the world for putting smiles on the faces of others whenever they are on stage. In Nigeria, Ali Baba who could be regarded as the father of stand-up comedy, brought it into limelight hence paving way for others to follow.
Coming down to Ondo City in South West Nigeria where most people think the entertainment atmosphere is dull. I can convincingly say that the perception is wrong. In recent times Ondo has produced stand-up comedians and event comperes that can match up with their counterparts in Nigeria with good service delivery while on stage. Event vendors should watch out for these creative masters of ceremonies in the year 2016.
MC Arkbishop: Olamide Akinmolayan is one of the best comedians to have come from Ondo kingdom. This young man started his career in comedy ten years ago during his days as an undergraduate student of English Studies in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State where he founded a comedy group called “House Of TALK”. The comedy group include acts like Still-ringing, MC Shem, Atol Atol (Rainbow fm), MC 2MUCH (Rave FM) . Arkbishop is also a songwriter and an On Air Personality whose radio show has aired on several radio stations across the country. He released his latest single “Akonke” few weeks back which has been enjoying massive airplay. He is currently signed to Lakeside Music in South Africa. His style of music is dubbed the Afro-Soul. His love for music plays much impact in his comic delivery . His greatest influence in the comedy industry is Late Gbenga Adeboye, Arkbishop is an ardent fan of Lagbaja. His pictures below:
Ay-Love: Akinborewa Ayokunlemi is a young talented stand-up comedian, event MC and consultant whose fashion sense is unequivocal second to none. Aylove is the CEO Don of Microphone Media. He started his career as an event MC more than five years ago. He was the first comedian to stage a comedy show in Ondo City tagged Contagious Laughter Season 1 at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, World Changers Sanctuary, Ondo in the year 2010. Since then the event which he has been hosting yearly has received positive accolades from all and sundry. It is no gainsaying that this young act has created a niche for himself in the entertainment scene. See pictures below:
Mc Fameland: Akinborewa Oluwagbenga holds a B.A Ed in English from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko and also a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Ibadan. His started professional event compere in 2013 as an MC in his church, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, World Changers Sanctuary, Ondo. From there he grew to be a versatile MC anchoring weddings, shows, concerts, dinner parties and many more. Mc Timmy: Solomon Fatokun Timi known as Mc Timmy is a stand-up comedian, singer, entrepreneur and financial instructor. His experience as an entertainer dates back to 2008. He has anchored and produced several shows like Lafta Hour, Music and Lafta among others. Timmy as he is fondly called is an exemplary MC, a creative thinker and a team player. He has featured on platform with great names in the industry such as SeyiLaw, Alibaba, Acapella and so on. See pictures below:
Mide-Coker: Olowosile Tomide Coker is an OAP, Comedian and MC from Ondo City. A graduate of History Education from Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. He was the best comedian at TENOR’S KINGDOM GOT TALENT, 2012. He also came first in the comedy competition organised by the Lagos State Government for youth corpers during his batch in year 2013. He has by God’s grace featured in some of the biggest shows in Nigeria and also shared the stage with the likes of Bovi, Basketmouth, Ay, Alibaba to mention a few.
