The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities has decided to embark on an indefinite strike from December 24, 2015 to protest the recent decision of the Federal Government to layoff 2,000 University workers across the country by January, 2016.
The National President of the Union, Mr Samson Ugwoke while addressing press men in Abuja said that the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the National University Commission (NUC) had concluded plans to terminate 2,000 members of staff drawn from 31 Universities.
The SSANU leader also claimed that the directive to retrench the 2,000 workers who are expected to retire in January 2016 was contained in a circular written and signed by Mr. E.O Fayemi, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education on behalf of the minister.
According to him, the Union is giving December 24, 2015 deadline to the Federal Government as part of efforts to prevent the 2,000 workers of the Universities from being sack.
