Nigeria Celebrates Ondo Schoolboy for Breaking Guinness World Record

by Ayomide Ayodele

Gbenga Ezekiel, a student in Senior Secondary School one  (SS 1) at Ijapo High School located in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has accomplished an incredible achievement.

The 16-year-old has now become a Guinness World Record holder for achieving the highest number of skips on one leg within a minute.

During his attempt, Ezekiel skipped 265 times, surpassing the previous record of 262 skips, which was previously held by Rasel Islam from Bangladesh.
The achievement was reported to the national coach of the Nigeria Rope Skipping Federation, Chubuisi Ukandu, and has been officially recognized and updated on the Guinness World Records website.

“The most skips in one minute on one leg is 265 and was achieved by Gbenga Ezekiel (Nigeria), in Akure, Nigeria, on 31 October 2022. The attempt took place at the Akure stadium,” Guinness World Records confirmed on their website.

Ezekiel had hoped that his attempt would be recognized for the record after he completed it last October, and when it was officially ratified, he couldn’t contain his joy and excitement.

Expressing his joy, he said: “I am very happy that my record has been ratified. I feel so special to be a Guinness World Record holder after taking inspiration from videos I have seen on the internet.

“I thank my coach for his efforts since he introduced me and other students to rope skipping. I am proud of my achievement and I wish to do more in the future”.

Ezekiel has become the first athlete from Ondo State, as well as the first Nigerian and African rope skipper, to accomplish this feat.
