Outsider Pulls Ahead In Early Polls In CAR Elections

by Bolaji

Early election results from the Central African Republic’s (CAR) presidential election show that former premier Faustin Archange Touadera has a slim lead.

The election, which took place on Wednesday, is expected to end years of conflict across the country.

In addition to serving as a prime minister, Mr. Touadera is also a former maths professor.  He was considered an outsider by many observers.

Currently he has a lead of about 30,000 votes. The election is expected to go to a runoff on January 31st.  The head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the CAR, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga called the election a “success”.
