Dr Vincent Paul, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has raised concern on the disturb trend of intimidation, harassment, imprisonment, and killing of journalists worldwide.
The distinguished scholar made this call through a statement released to journalists on Sunday, in commemoration of the 2025 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
He noted that journalists engage in the noble cause of unraveling the truth in such a way that sustains democracy, strengthens leadership, and keeps society informed about the actions of individuals, governments, and organisations even when it portends serious threat to their safety and well-being.
He noted that despite the painstaking efforts of journalists to keep citizens informed, they continue to face intimidation, harassment, imprisonment, and even death simply for fulfilling their professional duty of truth-telling and public enlightenment.
“Disturbingly, in many cases, the perpetrators of these crimes go unpunished, fostering a culture of fear, silence, and impunity.
“Ending impunity is not merely about seeking justice for individual journalists; it is about defending freedom of expression, protecting human rights, and safeguarding the public’s right to know,” he said.
He called on critical stakeholders, including governments, media organisations, civil society groups, and citizens to put in place conscientious effort to bring to book instances of attack against journalists during the course of their duty.
“Today, as the world marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, we, as individuals, institutions, and nations, are reminded of the indispensable role journalists play in promoting transparency, accountability, and justice for humanity.
“Across the globe, journalists serve as the voice of the voiceless, amplifying the concerns of ordinary citizens and shaping public awareness through information sharing and education.
“They are the drivers of knowledge dissemination, reaching every corner of society, and their work truly embodies the transformative power of information.
“Journalists also play a crucial role in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, contributing significantly to the evolution of modern human endeavours, including the advancement of Information and Communication Technology, which has brought the world to our fingertips.
“Journalists are indeed friends to all citizens in the realm of reportage. They break news for everyone who listens, linking communities to the world around them. They project the good image of individuals, organisations, and nations that extend friendly hands of cooperation through open communication and transparency.
“Let us stand united to say no to impunity and yes to accountability, fairness, and solidarity for a more just and inclusive society. A nation that silences its journalists silences its conscience, weakens its integrity, and hinders its development.”
