INFORMATION MINISTER CALLS FOR CALM OVER SUSPENSION OF NIGER RADIO

Mohammed Idris, The Minister of Information and National Orientation has solicited for calm over the suspension imposed on a radio station in Minna, Niger State named Badegi FM.

 

Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media made this known on a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.

 

Idris explained that the concerns raised by concerned stakeholders in the industry as regards the unilateral suspension of Badegi FM by the Niger State Government.

 

It was reported that the governor of Niger state, Umaru Bago during an expanded state All Progressives Congress caucus meeting in Minna on Friday ordered the suspension of the radio station on the premises of of unethical broadcasting and incitement by the station.

 

While acknowledging the concerns raised, the minister, however, noted that the suspension of broadcasting licences falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission, as stipulated by law.

 

“In the light of this, the minister welcomes the decision of the Niger government to formally report the perceived ‘unethical behaviour’ by Badegi FM to the NBC,” the statement said.

 

The minister sued for calm as he assured concerned stakeholders that the National Broadcasting Commission has the mandate to resolve issues and dispute fairly and impartially.
