Wearing the Kimono Jacket

Someone who isn’t fashion inclined might want to ask what a Kimono is? Let’s put it in the simplest form… A Kimono is a long oversized informal jacket without lapel. C’est finis!

It comes in different colours, fabrics, designs and patterns. The Kimono came originally from Japan, and began to gain recognition when designers all over the world incorporated it in their designs, being showcased at fashion shows abroad…  Crossing borders to Africa. African designers got an insight from these beautiful piece, revamped it using our widely accepted fabrics of Ankara, in the case of Nigeria and Kente for Ghana.

It’s a fashion trend everywhere in the world. You can’t go wrong with a Kimono.  Check social networks; Facebook, Instagram; it’s a tasty, chic, classy trend. I bet you don’t want to be left out!!!

Let me quickly give some tips on how to wear the trend

  • For a conservative look pair a sleeveless Ankara Kimono with your favourite turtleneck long-sleeved top/ a shirt with a denim jean of your choice and a cute heel. Take a cue from the fashionista, Adetoke Oluwo. She slays effortlessly.

For office/church

You can pair also with a long-sleeved top (V-neck is always the best) and Skirt (high-waist) with your comfy shoe/heel/sandal.

For a daring look, try any of this–

Pair the Kimono (with or without sleeves) with a bustier tube top and a long flared trouser,  preferably an Ankara trouser. Fashion stylist, Teni shares her look.
