UROMI TRAGEDY: KANO CONDEMNS KILLING OF TRAVELLERS IN EDO

The Kano State government has condemned the mob attack and killing of some travellers accused of kidnapping in Edo State

In a statement by the Kano commissioner of information and internal affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, which read, the state government condemned the “heinous act” and demanded a firm response from security and judicial institutions.

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, also condemned the mob attack and killing of the travellers.

Waiya said the incident highlights the “alarming increase in extrajudicial killings” across Nigeria.

“All individuals found to be complicit in this atrocity must be brought to justice, including any law enforcement personnel who may have neglected their duty,” the statement reads.

“Nigerian authorities are reminded of their unequivocal obligation under international law to protect the rights and lives of all citizens, ensuring that no act of violence or torture goes unpunished.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu and Governor Monday Okpebholo to denounce this act unequivocally and to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to justice by ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly prosecuted through a fair and impartial trial.

“The Uromi tragedy, sadly, is not an isolated event but part of a broader and alarming trend of vigilante violence across the nation. This culture of impunity can only be countered by decisive action—both punitive and preventive—to reestablish the rule of law,” Waiya advised.

Reiterating the need for human rights protection, the state government also demanded measures to prevent any recurrence of such violence.
