REPS RESCINDS DECISION ON DEATH PENALTY, IMMUNITY CLAUSE

The House of Representatives has reversed its decision on proposed amendment to the two bills -the death penalty law and removal of immunity for the Offices of the Vice President, governors, and deputy governors- barely twenty-four hours after passing them for second reading.

 

This was disclosed by the House leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere on the floor of the House during plenary on Tuesday.

 

It would be recalled that as part of 42 proposed legislation considered on Wednesday, both bills passed through second reading on the floor.

 

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who presided in the absence of the speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, explained that the step was necessary in a bid to enable the house undertake a more robust on the bills.

 

“We want to apologise to the sponsors of the bills, but this action is to enable the House to have a further debate considering the importance of the subject matters,” Kalu said.
