GABRIEL’S LAST-GASP HEADER GIVES ARSENAL STATEMENT VICTORY AT NEWCASTLE

Arsenal took all three points at St James’ Park in dramatic fashion thanks to Gabriel’s last-gasp winner. The defender headed home from Martin Odegaard’s corner to seal victory.

Mikel Merino had equalised with six minutes of normal time remaining, nodding in off the post from Declan Rice’s cross.

It came after Nick Woltemade had put Newcastle in front in the first half, heading home from Sandro Tonali’s excellent delivery following a well-worked short corner.

But Gabriel’s late winner means Arsenal are now just two points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Tino Livramento also left the field on a stretcher in what looks to be a huge blow for Newcastle.

In the opening quarter, Viktor Gyökeres thought he had won a penalty for himself and Arsenal when Jacob Murphy’s badly underhit backpass left Nick Pope scrambling and he seemed to bring down Viktor Gyokeres with the Arsenal striker bearing down on goal.

Referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot signalling that a penalty kick has been awarded to Arsenal for Nick Pope’s foul on Gyökeres but Gillett was summoned to the screen after VAR spotted the slightest of touches on the ball. The decision was subsequently overturned in a controversial manner.
